Este taller, coordinado por Francisco-J. Hernández Adrián, es un seminario-taller de cuatro horas donde se explorará inicialmente una constelación de conceptos que se apoyan en las prácticas artísticas, curatoriales y críticas de Gonzalo González, Benedetta Panisson, Ramiro Carrillo y Francisco-J. Hernández Adrián, quienes expondrán sus planteamientos en torno a estos conceptos para incitar a continuación a un debate más amplio, centrado en los proyectos de los participantes de las residencias. El taller incluye la proyección de Come to Venice (2013) de Panisson, corto que servirá como punto de partida para abrir y extender el debate, subrayando la idea de que la obra de González dialoga con diferentes formas de expresión artística y audiovisual. Gonzalo González (Tenerife, 1950) es uno de los artistas más reconocidamente importantes, expansivos y versátiles de las Islas Canarias. Su obra se ha expuesto numerosas veces en Canarias y en la Península, además de en diferentes ciudades de Europa, Estados Unidos y Latinoamérica. Comisariada en TEA por Ramiro Carrillo, Estar aquí es todo recoge la obra reciente de González en diferentes medios: pintura, dibujo, escultura, fotografía y vídeo. Benedetta Panisson (Venecia, 1981) es una artista y activista conceptual excepcionalmente dinámica cuyo trabajo en diferentes medios interpela a diferentes públicos, contextos de recepción y debate: el cine, la fotografía, la vídeo instalación, el dibujo y la performance. Entre sus proyectos recientes centrados en el vídeo y la fotografía se cuentan Come to Venice (2008-2015), Excess Island (2011-2019) y People do Water (2013-2019). Ramiro Carrillo es profesor y Director del Departamento de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de La Laguna. Es autor de numerosos textos críticos sobre artistas canarios contemporáneos y ha comisariado dos importantes exposiciones de Gonzalo González. Francisco-J. Benedetta Panisson’s solo exhibition, a photographic project that came to life in 2013 as the artist's desire to define an archive of images depicting the subjects of her obsessive research, bodies immersed in the sea. People Do Water continues Benedetta Panisson's research on erotic imagery in maritime spaces. The relationship between body and sea becomes a pleasure device and takes shape in hydrophilia: sexual arousal in diving into the sea, and in observing images of people in the water. The exhibition is a confidence: the artist's stakeouts to photograph on film bodies immersed in sea water, the voyeuristic aesthetic of close-ups, the performative action with the waves, the taboo-breaking responses in a video made by her daughter Anita. Panisson stages something so intimate that it belongs to everyone: the relationship with environmental space, which here is a perpetual, and physical, falling in love with the sea. The photographs are part of the personal archive taken by the artist, since childhood, on the beaches of the Venice Lido and continued on various shores. People do Water was presented in 2016 at the Onassis Cultural Centre in Athens as the beginning of a longterm project. The sea is the center of Panisson's research: Guarda il Mare, 2004, in which the sea mesmerizes to the point of inactivity; Come to Venice, 2008-2013, a group performance on tides, exhibited at the Maison del l'UNESCO in Paris, at the TEA museum in Tenerife, and in the context of Contingent Movements Archive, platform of the Maldives Pavilion at the 55th Venice Art Biennale; Excess Island, 2011-2021, in which queer oceanic cultures merge into photographic imagery; Island, Sex, Photography, doctoral research project at Durham University (UK); Sexual Display from the Abyss, 2021, on representations of a sexual act between two octopuses, presented at the 11th European Feminist Research Conference; Excess Island culminates a decade-long investigation into sensory poiesis and photographic emotiveness that documents acts of co-constitutive recognition between two modern protagonists: the voluble, sexual, camera-wielding human, and the sublime, refractive, and potentially hostile biosphere. In this imaginary and photographed relation, who makes what and who constitutes whom? Excess Island suspends the impetus to commodify environmental objects and investigates sensing and coexisting on the margins of accelerated consumerism. Panisson’s photographs do not transact in exoticism, but embrace a reparative sense of self and place. As island environments grow increasingly constrained by material and audiovisual occlusions, these photographs evoke creative resistance and responsible action for the sake of multiple forms of life, personae, and sensuous pleasures that can open up fresh affective and conceptual passages. Panisson’s sensory islandscapes demand our participation in an unproductive, queer, and reparative future of intimate relation. The camera is already there, and Panisson’s work makes this apparent with political urgency, aesthetic fluency, and a contagious and reparative optimism. Narratives for change: the united power of people, stories and technologiy to induce change. 2014 The event is held under the High Patronage of the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The workshop will analyze the role of narratives for public engagment at the nexus of science, ICT, and the Arts. The workshop will gather experts from different filds (S&T, policy and the Arts) to discuss ideas and share experiences in public engagement by use of the combined power of narratives, new technologies, and the Arts. The event is organized by EC funded program “Emergency by Design”. Artists, scientists, policy makers, as well as citizens rely on and construct nerratives when they produce artwork, theories, policies, or social movements. Such narratives become part of and forge an identity and are themselves transformed through their use. The union took place at the port mouth of of S. Nicolò. He was clad in ermine and with a horn on his head; he slowly paraded aboard the Bucintoro, to such an extent barded with gold statues that it became an object unfit for navigation. Blessed water was poured into the water, a ring was thrown into the waves. Desposamus te, mare. In signum veri perpetuique dominii, the formula says. The ceremony was made sacred by Pope Alexander III in 1173 with the words, Doge of Venice, this is the wedding ring of your marriage to the sea. From now on, we want you and your successors to marry her every year. The doge is a male, therefore, the sea a female. The ceremony, for centuries, represented a spiritual gesture of mutual protection: the male doge by taming her, the female sea by promising not to provoke unfavorable storms. The political and economic value of dominance over the seas, which the Serenissima particularly cared about, was also stated. Both the gender issue and the fact that domination of one subject over another can be acted out through marriage in a patriarchal form, in this case between human and waterscape, remain unrelevant details. In light of international and legal acknowledgements, such as the Tiwi Island case, analyzed by Veronica Strang, where native people declared that Santos company drilling could spiritually and ecologically destabilize the entire island community, leaves us to ponder the question: if spirituality still values to protect an ecological system, and whether this intersects some form of genderization of the aquatic environment, the concept of ownership, as Strang herself points out, it suggests that the material qualities water elude such conceptual fixity, and enable – indeed necessitate – more fluid forms of ownership. My paper focuses precisely on this proposal of fluidity to be intertwined with the question of gender, when this is attributed to a sea, as in the case of the Venetian marriage of the sea. It is the first visual experience of sexual activity between abyssal octopuses in their oceanic habitat: they are two males of two different species. Abstract My PhD research (Durham University) focuses on visual productions in relation to sexualities in insular territories. Since the late nineteenth century, ethnography, photography, and then video, have structured a visual exploitation of what in the eyes of Western explorers was considered hostile, perverse, and nudity to be tamed, creating imaginaries, erotic exoticism, and data deemed scientific. A form of study aimed at creating sexual peripheralities in territorial peripheralities, such as oceanic islands. What culture and morality assimilates hostility with sexuality? In particular, a footage recorded in 1998 at North Sentinel (Andaman Islands), and analyzed by Vishvajit Pandya (2009), whose natives are still coonsidered as uncontacted, and preserved by Indian authorities as such, but spotted by British settlers, then anthropologists, and finally illegal tourism, shows one of the few approaches to the island. Coconuts are thrown from the boat, some natives pick them up, others perform sexual gestures considered by Indian authorities to be obscene, and a way of defending themselves. A critical question arises here: in 1998 how can the North Sentinel indigenous people, deemed unaltered by Western and Central Indian sexual-related cultures and morals, perform purposefully hostile sexual gestures? Here It is analized the notion of sexual diversity in those who study native peoples in oceanic islands, with the aim of defusing the hostility-sexuality pair. Affiliation Durham University (UK). The ceremony, for centuries, represented a spiritual gesture of mutual protection: the male doge by taming her, the female sea by promising not to provoke unfavorable storms. The political and economic value of dominance over the seas, which the Serenissima particularly cared about, was also stated. Three inversions are proposed: from assigning a gender identity to the sea and enacting patriarchal-marital domination, to embracing a fluid relationship with it; from exploiting maritime resources to protecting the sea ecologically; and from a hierarchical structure with a powerful man (formerly the Doge, today the mayor and a Church member) to an horizontal inclusivity. Furthermore, in the context of global interdependence between island cultures - relevant today with the common issue of the rising sea levels - it is crucial to connect this ritual between humans and the sea with other island cultures and their sea-related rituals. This project focuses on the value of the sea and intertwines it with issues of gender and queer-feminist ecology concerning aquatic spaces. As in the case of other projects by Benedetta Panisson, also Queer Sea Marriage has a double outcome: an academic research about the relation between humans and waterscapes under a queer and gender studies’ lens, and a work in progress of a collective and participated art performance. Marianna Biadene’s Bio (Queer Sea Marriage’s co-curator and local project coordinator) Dancer/choreographer and performing artist, Marianna trained in contemporary dance, ballet and Indian classical dance in Italy, UK and India (Kalakshetra Foundation). She trained at The Place School of Contemporary Dance in London, where she started her professional career (2000-2012). She presented her work as soloist and performed in high-profile international productions in Italy, Europe and India at prestigious theatres and dance festivals.
